How do you make public art fun and interactive for everyone?

We're making Art for Everyone at the North Vancouver Shipyards! Studio Meanwhile is bringing interactive fun to the shipyards with the help of Vancouver-based artist Pablo Zamudio in our latest City Pong table tennis table. Created in collaboration with the Lower Lonsdale Business Improvement District, this interactive piece of public furniture is meant to spark play, connection, and creativity in the heart of the Shipyards—adding a splash of colour and a fun new way for people to enjoy the space together.

The OPPORTUNITY

The Pacific Sands Beach Resort sought an organization to design and build a new destination development. The parking lot drew the attention of Pacific Sands, who, in turn, approached Studio Meanwhile to convert the vacant space into a vibrant resort feature.

The APPROACH

Studio Meanwhile partnered with Pacific Sands to design and build a modular café and bespoke custom commercial kitchen. A Hawker Box was the perfect product to achieve the desired fusion of adaptability and creativity and transform the vacant lot into a dynamic hub.

The warm wood exterior feels right at home in this beach front Tofino property and its wild surrounding landscape.

The sweet treats and smooth coffee attract guests of all shapes and sizes.

Accessible ramp allows all to enjoy this beautiful space.

The Outcomes

The Beach Shack Café was the result of this project. The café a testament to the spirit of meanwhile use projects and placemaking. The modular café was a perfect addition to Pacific Sands' tourism development and introduced micro-retail amenities to their breathtaking coastal backdrop.
