How do you make public art fun and interactive for everyone?

We're making Art for Everyone at the North Vancouver Shipyards! Studio Meanwhile is bringing interactive fun to the shipyards with the help of Vancouver-based artist Pablo Zamudio in our latest City Pong table tennis table. Created in collaboration with the Lower Lonsdale Business Improvement District, this interactive piece of public furniture is meant to spark play, connection, and creativity in the heart of the Shipyards—adding a splash of colour and a fun new way for people to enjoy the space together.

Not your papa's ping pong table.
It's actually Pablo's.

The OPPORTUNITY

LaSalle College Vancouver has relocated to a new building designed by TAD architecture. The College boasts approximately 90,000 square feet across the buildings seven floors, including two large terraces on the third and seventh floors. Meanwhile was brought in to outfit these terraces with flexible modular furniture that would create a space for students to unwind and soak up some sun.

The APPROACH

Outfitted with 54 pieces of our City Blocks urban furniture these terraces are built to serve the students and staff in any and all ways they might want to enjoy this beautiful outdoor space. With Woonerf and Arch tables to facilitate communal meals or work sessions, Urban Loungers for kicking back, Pocket Block for a more focused personal space and City Pong Tables to unleash some energy and joy!

The centrepiece, a beautifully painted City Pong Table in collaboration with Vancouver-based artist Ali Bruce, helps students relax (or get riled up) with a game of rooftop table tennis.

Each piece has been thoughtfully chosen and placed, to complement every scenic outdoor area on campus.

Multiple spaces facilitate students' time for play as well as rest in between classes.

With a bright range of brand colours, Meanwhile's City Blocks Pocket Blocks all come together at the new LaSalle college campus to add colour, fun and play to the students' daily experience.

The Outcomes

This is Art for Everyone.

Ali Bruce is a Vancouver based mural artistand illustrator, specializing in bold brightand nostalgic designs. After studying visual art and communication design she’s worked independently for over a decade, and has painted dozens of murals all over the city and province.
