How do you make public art fun and interactive for everyone?

We're making Art for Everyone at the North Vancouver Shipyards! Studio Meanwhile is bringing interactive fun to the shipyards with the help of Vancouver-based artist Pablo Zamudio in our latest City Pong table tennis table. Created in collaboration with the Lower Lonsdale Business Improvement District, this interactive piece of public furniture is meant to spark play, connection, and creativity in the heart of the Shipyards—adding a splash of colour and a fun new way for people to enjoy the space together.

Not your papa's ping pong table.
It's actually Pablo's.

The OPPORTUNITY

Back Country Brewing aimed to develop an under-utilized meanwhile space, accommodating more guests and hosting events. The objective was to fashion an inviting, environment-capable space to enhance patrons' outdoor dining experience. Recognizing the potential in their parking lot, the brewery reached out to Studio Meanwhile to transform the space to meet these objectives.

The APPROACH

Studio Meanwhile embarked on this project, designing and constructing two connected Box Parklets using upcycled shipping containers. Strategically placed directly in front of Back Country Brewing, these parklets were a result of collaboration with both Back Country Brewing and the City of Squamish. The creative journey didn't end there. Hawkers collaborated with the urban art muralist team, The WKDNRS, to create a custom branded mural for the project. The resulting mural proudly displays Back Country Brewing's distinctive beer can design.

Squamish is famous for its outdoorsy culture, so naturally the outdoor space for guests to drink in the delicious beer AS WELL as the sun and breeze was well received.

Backcountry Brewing serves up delicious beer with wildly unique names and can designs. It is a well known and loved gathering space for the Squamish Community.

The large window areas are equipped with mesh covers to keep the evening bugs out so the space can be enjoyed well into the night.

The Outcomes

The transformed space has not only provided Back Country Brewing with an economic boost but also serves as a model for any brewery or restaurant owner looking to enhance their outdoor dining experience.

This is Art for Everyone.
